Colour and Movement – Color y Mocion

Just another one from an older bullfight paintings series. I found it some time ago among older paintings.

Just color and movement!

Toroscape 58 - by Miki

Color y moción, nada mas, y nada menos!

Toro Rescued from The Trash

A little bullfight painting from the past, which I found going through older paintings, in the intention to make some order there, throwing away what seems to me unworthy to be kept. In a first impulsion this one was about to land in the trash too, but in the last moment it escaped.

Looking closer at it, I was charmed by the spontaneity, the inexactitude, the basical attitudes of  bull and bullfighter.

I remember exactly when I painted it, it was in the lounge of my parents flat in the French Pyrenees, 4 years ago in autumn, I had come  for a week to paint outside , but the weather was awful all the time and I could not do one sketch outside. So I ended painting inside from fantasy, loads of gouache/watercolour impressionist landscapes, which I present in my sites under the name

“Times of The Day”.

And somewhere, at some times of the day, I also painted some bullfight. This one took 5 minutes…

A New Perspective – Una Nueva Perspectiva

An older bullfight painting, just painted from imagination on a rainy day in the Pyrenees, some years ago.I had used gouache for that one, in fact it was an experiment of also using the painting knife with gouache. i did like the effect.

What is amazing by this one is that the original painting is tiny, and yet, the photo of it makes believe that it is huge. And in fact, thanks to modern technologies of scanning and printing, it is available in huge formats in fantastic Giclee print quality. Why is the painting looking so big? The composition I guess, the perspective… I rarely do bullfight paintings from that angle, but perhaps I should, it looks quite attractive to me.

Toroscape 56 - by MIki

Motion and Emotion – Mocion y Emocion

A new Toroscape… a quick one this time, more in impressionist style, with rash and impatient watercolour and gouache brushes. Not interested in any detail, just in movement and vibrancy. Basically primary colours, no time to search for more sophisticated nuances, it is a question of life and death!  🙂

Simply another style of bullfight painting…

About this painting somebody from the USA just commented”

Fantastic feeling of motion and emotion! Bravo!

Toroscape 53 – by Miki

Braco!”

Fighting with Yellow and Pink – Luchando con amarillo y roso

Yellow and pink.. a combination of colours which i just adore! Which is one of the reasons why my favourite bullfight paintings are those which feature the first part of the bullfight, when they fight with that cape, yellow on one die, pink on the other side. It just looks gorgeous! Unfortunately most of the people do not really know the bullfight from inside are not even aware about that cape, and think that the bullfighter cape is always red. Which is, I guess, the reason why 95% of my bullfight paintings sales are those featuring the red cape. What a pity! a pity or me above all,a s I would love to paint much more of this first phase of the fight. But well, i have to go with my clients wishes, at least most of the time…

So, for those who are interested in technical details, here is some info about the pink and yellow cape:

“The ‘Brega’ cape is an instrument to fight, made of fabric, with the shape of a cape, used at the beginning of the bullfighting to wish good luck, as well as to do some artistic moves.
There are three specific parts in the ‘Brega’ cape:
The front part of the cape, which is dyed intense pink. In the superior central part, a semi-circle addition called ‘esclavina’ is sewed in the same colors.
The back of the cape is yellow. In the back the name of the bullfighter is written in black.
The last part is the lining, perhaps because it is the only one that is not shown. But it is a fundamental part, as it is easy to handle and gives consistency to the fabrics.
This cape must not be confused with the cape ‘de paseo’ that is only used during the ‘paseillo’. The shape is the same than the shape of the ‘Brega’ cape but it is a bit smaller. It is decorated with stripes, sequins of gold and also religious images.
It is usual, at the end of ‘el paseillo’, to give it to some person as deference to keep it for the bullfighter during the corrida.
Measures aprox. 2,5 metres (wide), 1,25 metres (high).”

Toroscape 52 - by Miki

Honte a moi! Shame on me!

Today I was so lucky to receive a mail which allows me to update this blog which I had because of other projects from which the bulls were absent.

Alors voila le chef’d’oeuvre/follows the work of art:

For the ones who don’t understand French I will translate, trying to be as faithful as possible to the original.. enjoy!

“Dear Madame,

I found your blog by accident, I am horrified and scandalised to see that you can be a bullfight fan, but what a shame, have you got a soul, a heart?

It is scandalous that such a bloody show, worthy of the Barbarians, is allowed in the 21st century.

And don’t come and tell me that the bulls don’t suffer, this would be ignorance from you, of course they suffer, and awfully, these poor animals are poisoned before they enter the ring, they pierce their lips, they suffer a long agony before his executioner kills him, what a scandal

And when I hear that bullfight is a tradition, I scream with laughter, you must know, dear Madame, it is not because a tradition is ancient that it is good, and what is it this tradition which consists in massacring animals for the pleasure of  stupid human beings, “Human” rather assassins, and you, you are as guilty as these torreros as you make advertising for these horrible shows.

Go and visit the CRAC site (Comity Radically Anti Corrida) and there, you will eventually see, it would be time for you to open your eyes, that the corridas are horrible and that they should be forbidden, and you should know that me, I will fight until the last day of my life to get the corridas forbidden and believe me, when it concerns animals, I am the biggest protector!

And don’t even try to convince me of the benefits of the corridas because it wuld be wasted effort, people like you I don’t even want to speak to them, you are an ignorant, without soul, without consciousness, I hope that your blog will be closed soon, shame on you!

Leila”

OLE!!!

PS: This “Leila” is obviously the “Catherine” that left all the lovely comments on different posts on my blog. I won’t translate them, as she tends to get a bit repetitive!

Bullfight paintings exhibition at the bullring

0810 bullfight paintings exhiition in Turre

In my last post I said I would publish some more photos from my bullfight paintings exhibition last year, at the bullring in Turre (Almeria, Spain), this charming little town where we live. I had got the special authorisation from our mayor for that, to be honest I had expected it to be denied as I applied, only 2 days before! The fact is they had never been confronted with such a petition in our town hall… but our mayor is a modern man, he even made sure himself that I got the space I needed, just by the entrance.

We don’t have a real bullring here in Turre, so on some important occasions, like the town fiesta in October every year, a mobile arena has to be constructed. Of course, it is just a tiny one, but I must say that I adored to ‘participate’ in the bullfight there. It was quite intimate, and of course the ambience was great, a bullfight here being quite a rare event..

0810 toros en fuegoIt was quite hilarious as the fire engine arrived and parked just by my exhibition. It really looked as if they were expecting that some anti-bullfight fanatics would arrive and set my paintings on fire!

0810 horses bulls and firemenOn the other side of the fire engine… I guess they were the horses from the picadores…

0810 JCB horsesIn fact there were horses everywhere outside the bullring, before the bullfight started. I suppose they had no room to “park” them inside the mobile arena. ..

0810 bulls in Turre

and this is where the bulls were parked, at the back of the arena, inside the lorry which brought them., waiting for their appearance on stage… and their death, unfortunately. I can tell you, there was a lot of restless movement and banging inside there, quite scary! Always sad when one thinks that these beautiful wild animals, so full of energy, will be killed within 10 minutes after the beginning of the fight. I must say that I suffer much more under this thought than under the sight of them being killed… It somehow makes me more conscious of the occasional unfairness of life and death…

I once had the opposite experience. I was invited to go to “the butchery” (I don’t know the right word), inside the arena, just after a bull was killed which I had just seen fighting. It was a deep existentialist shock, to see  this wild animal which had fought so bravely some minutes ago, hanging there by his feet and being skinned… I will never forget this!

Man, Bull and Horse in Digital Light

Toroscape42S

An example of pure Digital Art. I do believe that the computer tools are very adequate to express artistically the vibrancy of the Fiesta. Unfortunately many people still think that Digital art is not Art at all. It happens to me quite often that some clients contact me, being interested in some digital bullfight painting, but when I tell them that these ones  are partly or totally digital art, they lose the interest.

But I must say that this happens above all in Europe. Over sea, especially in America and Canada, the people don’t care really what it is if they love it!

Anyway, this is a digital painting’ based on a wonderful photo taken by my French friend and bullfight lover Joel D. My special thanks goes to him for allowing me to use his photos.

I thought it might be interesting to see both art works close to each other, the photo and the painting!

Lundi 13 avril 2009 – Corrida de rejon

Rejon 1S

2009ToroAcrylic03S

by Miki, May 2009 – Acrylics on canvas, 100 x 50 cm

One of my 2009 new series on bullfight acrylics paintings on canvas… I love these extreme vertical formats, quite a challenge though to fit in the bll and the bullfighter… one has to cut parts, but when one cuts at the right place (no blood!), the result can be very striking…
