Toro Tarantino

Some weeks ago I had been asked to design a bullfight artwork for a 2 by 6 metres wall of a restaurant in the Philipiines.

The owner said:

“The whole feel of the restaurant is very Quentin Tarantino-ish…”,

this is why the painting was created in that style

Bullfight Art for Girls – Arte Taurina para Chicas

Another Toroscape in impressionist style, and involving the pink & yellow cape.

Bull Jumping into A Redsea … Toro Saltando en Un Mar Rojo

It is not easy to regularly come with new bullfight paintings: the theme is always the same!. But well, clients regularly ask me to show them my last works, so I have no choice, being known as specialised in bullfight paintings, I have to paint some new stuff from time to time. I try to change the colours, the perspective, the technique, the closeness of the subject… for this one today I chose a view a little bit from above, which gives a great perspective of the bull.  For the colours I followed my intuition, so please don’t ask me why the back of the bull is blue!  🙂

I hope you enjoy

2010 Acrylics Toro – 70 x 70 cm – by Miki

Espero que les guste!

Bring out your inner bullfighter!

Sometimes I really wonder for what my bullfight paintings are used. I have many examples, but one of the most marking ones for me was one day a young boy contacting me, wanted to use one of my bullfight paintings for his marching band by some event. As always, I was promised to get a photo of the T-Shirt, and of the band by the event, but as always, I did not get anything. I often wonder how fast people forget their promises, and generally their good manners on the net…

Luckily there are still people who know how to behave. The best example was a business man from the UK, who bought an original bullfight painting of me, and the copyright outright, in the intention of using it as the logo of his new company. The man was kind and respectful from the very beginning, we developed a nice relationship and we are still in friendly contact from time to time, him informing me about the progress of the company.

THIS, I LOVE!

Anyway, 2 weeks ago I was asked for the permission to use  following painting for a flyer for an event at the Crescendo Club, apparently somewhere in Ontario   (www.clubcrescendo.com). Asking what it was about, I received following answer

“This is the 10th in a series of events from around the world including Brazil, Greece, and Mexico. We bring in DJ’s of the certain ethnicity and play music with the nation’s cultural influence. In this case, for Spain, we will put up the Spanish flag around the club and wear themed Spanish outfits. We cater these events to people who appreciate the music and culture of the featured country.”

So people who will attend the event, i wish you a great time there. And don’t be scared to bring out your inner bullfighter, our world needs courageous and crazy people!

Why so much yellow

After my last blue acrylic bullfight painting , I urgently needed to go back to my favourite colours which are yellow and orange. Sometimes I decide to force myself to completely change my palette of colours, just to make sure that i don’t get stuck in one direction. The world is much too big and too rich to stick to one colour, style, technique, theme, etc… which has often the effect that some people tell me that i should focus! God, i hate it when they come with that! Why in hell should I focus on anything? I love painting, I want to paint everything and in all possible ways and colours! So called art critics would day that to find the own personal style is artistic success, I would say it is artistic death!!!

But as I said, I just love warm colours, and it is hard to change it. And how happy I am when I have made a cold colour exercise, to come back to my wonderful yellows! Then I use them a lot, as you can in my new bullfight painting!

If I have to die, I would like to fight to the end…

When I got up this morning and checked my mails, I had the wonderful surprise to get two great comments (from the same person though) on my Youtube bullfight paintings video. Normally when I see that there is some comment about my bullfight art, I first take a deep breath before I read it, being used to get insulted, you know,  “I haven’t got a soul, I should be thrown to the beast myself, etc…”, stuff like that. Of course, i also get the opposite mails, wonderful mails telling me hoe great my bullfight paintings are. And in fact I have a great circle of clients around the world. But still, I could do without these hate mails and comments.

Anyway, here they are, the words from today, written by tchetcheibiza :

This is one of the most brave things ever. Every one is afraid when a dog attack in the street, now imagine your self been face to face with this beautifull animal, the bull, like 500kg – 1ton of pure muscle and explosive energy, he can just run over you break your bones and smash you to the death. The rush of adrenalin would be incredible, the courage shown by those men are amazing. thumbs up, spanish finest!!”

and

“Let me ask something, Every one says: Is better die fighting than let them kill you. I think in this way too… if I have to die, I would like to fight to the end. So why in the fuck sake people are against bullfightings? The ox will be killed anyway if they dont use it on a bullfight. You all that are against this should stop eating meat. Most of animals for food are created without the adequate space, imagine yourself been born inside a prision just to when you grow up become food for some one.”

A New Acrylic Bull

I have been asked, at different occasions, to create new bullfight paintings on canvas. Hum, not so happy about it… for the last year I have been painting mainly with watercolour, gouache, pastel, pencils and also digital tools, and the thought of going back to acrylics was not very appetising. I explain: when I paint acrylic bullfight scenes, it becomes a wild fiesta in my atelier, and colours, mainly vibrant black and red, are flying all over the place, landing partly on the canvas but also everywhere else, especially on myself! And I don’t really like it!

Well, today i eventually did it. There was that half done painting I started one year ago, i chose to finish it. I normally hate to go back to an old painting, it is like drinking cold coffee. But well, sometimes, when times are hard,  one has to drink cold coffee…. 🙂

Toro Evanescento

Sometimes it is very interesting to go back in time, and look at what one did in the past. One had another technique, one was in another mood, had even perhaps another life… and always one can see it in the style and in the technique one used. Also there were always times when I had a bullfight phase, and I painted a lot of them, but after some weeks I couldn’t see the bulls and bullfighters any more, and I had to stop suddenly, often in the middle of some works. Anyway, these last days, animated as well by the antibullfight fighters as  by new clients from far away -and their wonderful compliments!-, I felt the urge to come back in the ring, In one my atelier rooms, there were some paintings lying around, abandoned months. probably even years ago… I just worked a little bit on them. Some, like the one I publish today, are really in a very different style, almost evanescent… I wonder what was my inner state as I started it!

Man, Bull and Horse in Digital Light

Toroscape42S

An example of pure Digital Art. I do believe that the computer tools are very adequate to express artistically the vibrancy of the Fiesta. Unfortunately many people still think that Digital art is not Art at all. It happens to me quite often that some clients contact me, being interested in some digital bullfight painting, but when I tell them that these ones  are partly or totally digital art, they lose the interest.

But I must say that this happens above all in Europe. Over sea, especially in America and Canada, the people don’t care really what it is if they love it!

Anyway, this is a digital painting’ based on a wonderful photo taken by my French friend and bullfight lover Joel D. My special thanks goes to him for allowing me to use his photos.

I thought it might be interesting to see both art works close to each other, the photo and the painting!
